Default Change for Ontario Harmonized Taxes

    Hi,

Just thought I would ask this question in advance in case others too are thinking the same think - so it's a premptive post.

Ontario, effective July 1st, 2010 - will be going over to a harmonized tax system.

Am I correct to assume that I can set this up a head of time and then flip a switch or something to make sure that my cart charges the applicable from July 1 and afterwards?

If yes, what's the best way of doint it?

Would I call mt existing tax-1 and the 1new system tax 2 and then when it comes for the change - delete tax-1 and then rename tax-2 to tax-1 would that work?

    Thanks as always.

I am just going to create a new tax-class called OntarioHST, and apply that tax to deliveries in the Ontario "zone".

I would be sending the package via Can Post or UPS – and as far as I know it goes straight from me to them with no intervention of the tax man.

Why would I have to do all the extra tax work – wouldn’t I just set up my store do base the shipping tax to that of Ontario (my store location)?

Is the same States/Overseas? I pay my taxman and because it’s another country – that Gov’t will charge the duty as needed – or at least that’s the way it works when I order from the states – I pay the store and then any additional duty charges.

Can someone help explain it to me?

Those are questions *best* asked to your accountant or tax advisor. You could also give a call to CRA or your local PST tax office, as they will also have the answers you seek. Their number is on your tax-remittance forms you send to them.

Ok - just some extra info.

As I understand it - if I have under $30,000 in sales then I don't need GST number and therefore only have to submit sales tax to Ontario gov't - the 8%

So since I fall into that category then I won't have to reconfigure your store for the HST - just keep collecting and paying the PST and everyone should still be happy.

Check PST tax office, the CRA and your accountant for further details

If any Americans are reading this thread with smug satisfaction, watch out! If even Greg Mankiw can get behind a VAT for the USA, it could be coming....

What is there about this thread that would cause an Amerian to view it with smugness? There are lots of places in the states with sales taxes. The HST is just another sales tax, different from its predecessors in the way it is applied perhaps, but otherwise unremarkable.

The fact that the US does not have a national sales tax.

I'm not applauding the sentiment, but it does exist.
