Better shipping options?

Hello,
I know this shipping issue has been talked to death, but I still haven't found a clear solution.

We are looking for a way to select only certain items for free shipping within the USA. Yes, ALL of the USA and it's territories. We have Order Total Modules - Shipping set to $140.00 for free shipping - National. This works great.

But we still need to SELECT CERTAIN products to allow free shipping within the USA AND allow customers to select a higher priced shipping item that they would have to pay for.

We do have the freeshipper enabled on a select few products, but of course it still shows no shipping charges for International customers even though it is set to United States shipping zone.

Free Shipping option, flat rate just won't work for us because of the similar priced products but with drastically different weights.

Soooooooooooooooo, what are the suggestions on addon mods or settings, fixes, etc.?

It's exhausting searching all the posts and not come up with the answers. So can we a good clear answer(s) for everyone to see?

We mostly ship with USPS and yes we did the recent up grade. Yes we do need to keep the weights so the propper shipping charges can be calculated.

... and what happens when your customer has one of the *certain* products and one that isn't that they want shipped the more expensive way?

Then they would have to pay for the whole order to be shipped the more expensive way. Generally we ship via usps priority and fedex ground. So the customer still gets fast shipping. But if they want it express, they need to pay for it.

Okay, then in reality, anything should have the option of expedited shipping?

Yes, IF we have that option selected in the different shipping mods. If we would like to offer Free Shipping via first class mail. The should have the option of paying for Priority or express.

The HUGE thing right now is to have free shipping on select items.
