Merge images

I'm just wondering if this is possible and if so can anybody give me any pointers where to start?
I think maybe using Image Handler 2 may be the easiest way as it already has a watermarking feature and that's similar to what I am trying to achieve.

What I'm after doing is merging a SOLD OUT image over the top of my regular product image if the product in question is sold out.

Anybody got any ideas of the best way to do this?

Hmmm, I've just realised how they've done it....it's another div over the top of the main image with a transparent sold_out.png image.

Trouble with that is as far as I'm aware, not all browsers support transparent png's do they? Earlier versions of IE?

That sites transparency doesn't work with ie6

But they are using a gif not a png

Transparcency works with png's in ie6
