I am running Zen Cart 1.3.8a. All patches are in.

I have a product composed of two pieces. One piece is easily shippable and the other piece is not. Together they cost a lot to ship in a single box but separately, they are relatively cheap. (Box and a tube)

To help get my store out of the "pickup only" phase with this product, I need to sell it online and give customers the option of choosing whether or not they wish to have the item that goes in the tube. I have currently configured this item as an attribute to the main product that easily fits in the box. So, you can check a box and add the hard-to-ship item to the order if you so choose. It adds weight and price increase correctly but I cannot figure out how to make it calculate the item as a separately shipped box. Should I be setting it as a flat rate just to avoid the whole automation aspect or is there an automatic way to calculate this?
