adding a custom item code (field)

Hi,
I'm using v1.3, and basically everything went smooth so far.

I need to add a unique item code to my products (books), so that when receiving the order I can handle it based on that code, and not simply based on the title, or isbn.
The code is a custom one for internal use.

Right now the info displayed are:

book title (product name)
author (manufacturer)
description
price
image

I need to add an alphanumeric code

Did I miss something when creating categories, and adding products?

How shold I do it?

Are you using the 'Model' field for anything?

No, I had thought of using some other field, but I don't see a model field when adding new product ... I might need an eye doctor ...
could you please tell me where exactly to look?
