Intermittent site loading Problem

Zen Cart 1.3.8a - has all the updates
originally hosted on a hostgator account
new hosting is on a hostgator reseller account


I moved a zencart from one host to another. This cart was working nicely on the first server.

To make the move I followed the directions as outlined here

I have a number of mods including multi-site installed. There was a little issue getting the multi-site working again only because the new site was setup just a little differently then the original site.
I got the multi-site working.

The problem is this.

The site is going down intermittently. It works for awhile and then it stops loading and the domain name loads a
'holding page' of some sort. I don't know what to call the page but it has the domain name of my site with a bunch of 'related searches' links on it. Nothing to do with the zencart.

This happens to the front-end of the cart as well as the admin. When the site goes down the admin won't load either. That holding page comes up.

A little while later I'll check and the site is back. I did some minor work in some of the language files and the site loaded fine after each change.

If I made an error in editing an includes file any problem would have shown immediately. Would an editing error result in intermittent loading problems for the front-end as well as the admin?

Anytime an error has occurred it's obvious the zencart is there but it's is having a problem loading.

What's happening is as if there's nothing on the site but that holding page.

I'm told there is a scripting error with the cart. If that is the case what do I look for? How is a scripting error for zen cart corrected?

In addition to that, the site just came back. Now when I try to use developers tool kit This is what I'm getting

Not Found

The requested URL /admin/developers_tool_kit.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I'm going to go use debug.

Will came back with what info I get from that.

1. Earlier today I had been using the developers took kit, so the file developers_tool_kit.php was most definitely there. It had to have been otherwise I would not have been able to use the tool kit. I went and checked the admin folder and it was no longer there. How it went missing I have no clue. That file and several others were missing when compared to my backups. I re-uploaded them and that issue seems to be corrected.

However the site loading intermittent problem continues.

I uploaded the debug utility to /includes/extra_configures. No report is being generated. The cache folder is set to 755

Sounds like an appropriate time to get your hosting company to support your hosting problem

Their response is "zen cart scripting error"

Well, if it wasn't doing that from day one of your Zen Cart install, then it's not a problem with Zen Cart in general. Intermittent problems almost never indicate a problem with the original code.

So, that leads to the next logical option: someone has changed something on your server. Either YOU or your staff or a hacker.
Or your hosting company has mucked with the server configuration.

Whenever things "suddenly" stop working as expected, I recommend:
a) have you applied all the posted patches, especially security patches?
b) have you done a THOROUGH site inspection and checked EVERY file on your server for rogue content? See the Recovering From Hacks FAQ for guidance: treat it as though you've been hacked until you can prove otherwise.
c) if the problem persists, then you need to get someone who understands your hosting server to look at what's going on at the server level. ie: the hosting company, including checking server logs for detailed error messages which will explain what's going on.

I'll go through the things you suggest.
