When upgrading to 1.3.9d (this was my first upgrades, prior ones done by a contracted person) I have resolved this problem. It was related to .DS-Store files placed in our store. They are part of an add on program that the contracted person had installed for a debugging, and then never removed. Since I removed these files when doing the upgrade (comparing the old 1.3.8a to 1.3.9d and seeing the differing files) I have had no problems. This feature works within seconds, now.
Just thought I'd post this in case someone else ran into the same problem.
