Default Shipping dimensions in products - canada post

With all the talk about, and problems with shipping dimensions, can one of you smart programmers PLEASE add an option in the product setup to add product dimensions in either or both imperial and metric, this can't be too hard to do for a programmer.

Canada post, and others I imagine need to capture individual dimensions to allocate products (as many as possible) to your chosen envelope or carton size, and they can even bounce back to the customer with recomended products that will still fit in a box without adding to shipping, an excellent cross sell.

a table like this (imagine it is a table)

    Units Width Height Length
    Imperial 1.97" x 6.50" x 1.18"
    Metric 5.0 cm. x 16.5 cm. x 3.0 cm.

(C.P. requires cm, others may require mm)

(with an option for one or both depending on who you ship with)

At this stage, I only need metric, but if I later ship to the States, I may need imperial.

Can't be that hard can it?

Does anyone else want this, I can't be the only one.

The existing Canada Post addon module already does as you describe.

    Um, no, it doesn't.
The Canada post addon can't predict my product sizes, it is not psychic, you have to measure and weigh all your products and enter them in your product description, you select your envelope sizes and carton sizes, all Canada post does is grab your dimensions that YOU have entered for your products, and fits them into your chosen envelopes or containers (which you set up in the CPC set up. If it finds the volume too large for one, it starts placeing them in your next size container.

YOU STILL HAVE TO ENTER YOUR PRODUCT SIZES IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION FOR THE MODULE TO GRAB.

here is a quote from the Canada Post Implementation guide.
"all SKU items in your inventory must be measured. A SKU uniquly dentifies all items in your inventory.
As a retailer, you are responsible for recording the length, width and height of each item you plan to sell from your on line store. Using a tape measure, follow the steps below for each SKU. Remember all measurements must be in cm."
(it goes on to describe how to measure different shaped items.)

"the measurements that you gathered should be placed in your catalogue so that their values can be passed on to sell online tm server for further calculations of delivery times and rates"

CANADA POST uses your calculations and the products ordered to fit into your pre selected container size, as mentioned above, and once it works out which containers, they can then read your database to top up the box with suggested products from your catalogue.

So once again, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE MODULE, Can some programmer do something please so as when entering product details, one can also enter these measurements, maybe with an option to include or not include measurements.

Well, I'm sorry you're having trouble finding it, but when I wrote the updates to the Canada Post module 2 years ago, it specifically offers the ability for you to enter LxWxH and specify inches vs centimeters, for each individual product. It also allows you to indicate whether the box ships on its own or can be combined with other items in one larger box.

I know of several sites that are actively using the CP module I'm talking about, which is freely available from the Free Software Addons link at the top of this page.

So, I'm guessing you've not installed the module correctly.

You wrote the module, I apologise for thinking you didn't know what I was talking about, when it was me that can't see these options.

Where are these iotions?, when I installed it, I jumped ahead of myself, and did not use the "install sql patches" intil later, I transferred the files with FTP, that may be where my problem is. How can I start again, or reinstall and override with out losing what I have done?

When you say the dimesions are there, do you mean in the product install or is it in the Cp module?

I am so confused, and sick of going to bed at 3 am, trying to get this going.

TO ANYONE INSTALLING THIS AND HAVING SAME PROBLEMS, to avoid embarrassment, take this advice, re-install first, that was my problem, it was installed incorrectly.

Now working fine, now for my next problem, and impossible to impliment I would imagine.

I sell various items, some of which are lock n lock containers used for geocaching, these are like a lunchbox. Other items are nano containers smaller than a fingernail, so if a customer buy's a lock n lock, thus smaller items can be packed in them, is it possible to adjust shipping if this occurs, thus weight will increase but not volume, see told you it is probably impossible.
    Discussed here: http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147641

Dr Byte, I apologise for thinking there was a problem with the module, not a problem with my installation, thank you so much for sorting me out, now I can get product up, and all I have left is my date issue (DMY as opposed to MDY which I can't fix, despite advice from posts.
