my question: i want to keep the background the earth tone but would like to make the area around the displayed products on the main page white. im not sure where of if i can do this.

If you don't find it in the existing css, add it and see if it has the effect you desire.

Just so you're aware - the book has a ton of good information, but it is primarily a store operator's manual, not a design manual. The finer points of design would fill several books.
