The effect I'm trying to get is one like the site

I would like to have a white background, with an image such as the tan checkered in the mainwrapper area I suppose, with the center column remaining white....
I haven't made any changes to the site yet, and I'm using the classic green template....
Would anyone be able to tell me where I would add the tile image? Thanks
