If you follow the linked tutorial you should not be messing with any php file code as you have posted

In your template and if it does not exist create it and look at
template_default/buttons/english

You will see many images
Follow the tutorial and make a 3 image combined for each of them
Upload to your_template/buttons/english

Add the styling to your templates stylesheet.css file

You Are Done
