add to customer order no download link showing up in their account

months ago i added whatever the module is that allows me to go into a customers details and edit an order by adding more details. I have a client who i am giving a download to for free. I told him i would add it to order he currently has in the system (since i didn't know how to create a new order for him and bypass the paypal payment and perhaps i should have turned on the check feature and do it that way??)
I dont' do this often so please tell me how to make the download actually appear in his account. I went and selected the item and when i go into the MY ACCOUNT and click on VIEW the only download link that appears is the original item that he did buy.

my workaround was to place another order on his behalf and this time turn ON the ability to pay using a money order and then i went and updated the status to processing...which gave me the results I originally was looking for...hope I didn't embarrass myself too much with this new business contact.
