Icon / graphic links in header bar

Is is possible to create and place graphics into the header bar so you can click on a graphic instead of just text link. I'm thinking I would like tabs on the header bar as seen on most browsers now.
Any help or push in the right direction would be most welcome.

Does anybody have any example code so I can see how to do it within zen cart or is there a mod that will do it.
If I can find one example then I could follow on but I am not very good at code yet so learning as I go.
