    Default Late Fee

I an new to Zen Cart and have begun setting up a very basic store. A majority of the products will be registration to an event. I have a category called "2010 Annual Meeting" setup, and have 4 or 5 products setup within that category - "All Week", "Monday Only", "Tuesday Only", "Wednesday Only" etc.

I need a way to add a $30 late fee to the entire order (not per product), if the order is placed on a certain date or after (for example, March 1), and the order includes an item from the 2010 Annual Meeting category.

How would one go about this?

What if you add a new field to the products table for:
    products_date_late_fee

and then you can use this to processes the Order and check the dates to add in the Late Order Fees ...

This would probably be best managed with an Order Total module for these fees ...

I am totally new to all zen cart. Do I add the field to the database through the Zen Cart admin, or directly in my MySql database?

Also, do I need to write my own Order Total module with the all the logic in it?

To do this you would need to add the field via phpMyAdmin then rewrite some files in the Admin to work with the new field then write an Order Total module to manage the calculation ...

So yes ... it would require some work to handle this fee management ...

Since your product is virtual, it sounds like you're products are free shipping. You could use the shipping module to add a fee to each order. Create a new shipping rate (Admin > Modules > Shipping) called "Late Registration Fee". When the late date is reached, apply the shipping "late" charge to each product.
