Category Properties Sidebox

I have a problem I am trying to work out, I have created a new product property field to the products and i was hoping to be able to create a sidebox similar to the manufacturers sidebox in which i can have a dropdown box display those properties values and when you click those properties it shows you the products with that value. I already have the property box i just need somebody to help me with the mysql select functions. My property is car_make_id and it is under the products table if i use the distinct function i can get the dropdown table to not display repeat entries in the dropdown box. thanks in advance for any suggestions
