How do I enter a NEW category after I already have inventory in the cart???

Since you have some categories already, you can add new categories at the top level; then if you want subcategories of your existing categories, move the products out of the existing category, make the new subcats, and move the products into the subcats.
If you don't have any categories at all, you will have to delete all of your products before you can create categories.

My answer was originally written to cover a general situation. If you want subcategories in one of your existing categories, just move the products out of it to a temporary location (some other category), create your subcats and move the products into the new subcats.
Top level means main categories.

I can't even create subcategories!!! I also noticed that I can't add to my manufacturer's list either...

Did you recently apply the security patches? This inability to make admin changes can be a symptom of incorrectly applied patch files.
Otherwise, if you have moved all of the products out of the category and you still can't see the "new category" button under it, there is some deeper problem that needs hands-on assistance (looking at the site live, and possibly admin access).

we have not added any security patches...we are usin the newest version 1.38 that came with cpanel...also, I can see the "new category" button and I can fill it out...when I hit the button it redirects me back to the admin home page

I have been helping sprint219 on this project, the only patch that was attempted to be installed was the pretty url's it did not work and I think I removed it all, but not sure. Were would I check and what file should I post here.
