    Default Shared SSL question

    Hi guys,

I have a small hosting company and a few of my clients run zencart stores. I want to look into offering shared SSL but not too sure how this works. Any information or tips and tricks on Shares SSL would be greatly appreciated.

If i register a private SSL to my main hosting website domain eg. mydomain.com can i then install the SSL on my clients domains?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

It depends upon whether you have your own server or resell for someone else, and what control panel your hosting uses. I'm afraid that this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions.

Normally you would use your server name for the SSL Certificate e.g. myserver.mydomain.com and then use that as the Shared SSL Address.

Ensim Pro control panels would handle Shared SSL like this: https://myserver.mydomain.com/customerdomain.com

cPanel control panels would handle Shared SSL like this: https://myserver.mydomain.com/~username

Thank you Vger for the quick reply,

I am starting to understand how this works i think. I resell from hostgator and have Cpanel and WHM. I still have some questions i hope you can help me with:

    1. So lets say I buy an SSL certificate for myserver.mydomain.com. How would i then setup https://myserver.mydomain.com/~username? Would I do this in my cpanel or is it an SSL setting?

2.Also once i have https://myserver.mydomain.com/~username how would i set this up in my customers zencart?

    3. What type of SSL certificate would you suggest i buy to do this?

    4. I read that if your site uses cookie-based PHP sessions, then shared SSL isnt going to work. Does zencart do this?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

You will need to discuss this with HostGator. They may allow full white-label Reseller hosting, but they may not - and in that case you won't be able to have your own Shared SSL which your customers can use. You'd have to use their Shared SSL.

Thank you for the reply Vger,

I have contacted HostGator and cannot have my own shared SSL. If i bought a wildcard SSL and had this installed would i then be able to add my customers site names as addon domains eg. customer.mydomain.com and then use this as a shared SSL?

    Thanks,

    Matthew
