Default Downloadable product deduct from quantity in stock?

I have tried searching for an answer to this, but I guess I'm not using correct terms. I don't think that this is something that no one's ever wanted to do before...

I have a shop set up that basically only sells downloadable products. Works great.

Now I have a service that we'd like to sell. It would also include a download that basically is the instructions to continue. We actually already have this set up. Also works fine in that the customer can purchase and download the instructions, etc.

What I want to know - is there any way to have this product/service set up so that when a customer purchases it that the quantity in stock automatically decreases? I only want to put maybe 5 in the shop so that the person providing the service doesn't have to continually go into the shop and manually take the product in and out of stock to not have too many orders at a time.

I hope that I have made sense. Is this even possible? I also apologize if this has already been discussed somewhere, but like I said, I couldn't find it with my search terms.

    Thanks in advance!

Should work that way out of the box. Do you have your downloadables set as 'virtual' ? They shouldn't be.

Isn't that the goal?? To sell as many as possible?

    Why only 5???
    Why not 500,000?

To my knowledge, they are NOT set at 'virtual'. Settings are:

Product is Virtual: No, Shipping Address Required
Always Free Shipping: No, Normal Shipping Rules

So, normally purchases do not deduct from the quantity in stock, which is the way that it should be with normal downloadable products.

But for this specific product, I actually want the purchases to deduct from the quantity in stock, but just can't figure out how to do that...I've tried switching some of the setting for this specific product, but it didn't work...

Well, in theory, yes one would always want to sell as many of something as possible, but this is a service with a normal turn around time of 1 week. If there are too many orders at once, then the SLA will be broken, so I'm looking for a way for the shop to manage some part of that process.

If you have a Product that is a Combination Physical Product that gets shipped and a Download Product ...

You need to mark the Product as:
Always Free Shipping: Special, Product/Download Combo Requires a Shipping Address
Add the Weight to the Product ...

Then add the Download Attribute(s) to the Product in the Attributes Controller ...

Now, what happens is the Product requires a Shipping Address for the Physical component and will have the Download from the Attribute ...

With this being a Combo Product, it will now track the Stock products_quantity on this Product ...

Ok, I understand this, but the product has no physical component. There is nothing that will be shipped. It is a purely downloadable product, but I still want the quantity to be reduced when it is purchased.

I'm beginning to think that this will not be possible...

At this time, Downloads do not track on stock ... you would have to customize the code to track download stock ...
