I would rather not have to switch the templates, as I don't want to screw anything up or lose and customizations I have. Would that have to be a permanent thing? If I switch it to test will I lose everything?

No. Just change to the Classic template in Admin - Tools - Template Selection and see if the problem persists, then switch back. The only thing you may have to redo is the sidebox settings.
