Funny looking characters    after moving to new server

I've searched in vain to find a good place to post this question. We are migrating a site from one server using php 4.4.8 to a server using php 5.2.12. My hoster thinks this is an encoding issue but based on what I've read I think it might be php-related.

I think your hoster is right.

I also suspect that you are trying to shut to door after the horse has bolted, i.e. the encoding changed in the move to the new server and the characters are now embedded in your data and will need to be edited out.

I don't know how your constructed your text, but there's an awful lot of redundant markup inserted by whatever editor your used, and suspect that it also included some (or actually just one) characters interpreted differently under different encoding protocols.

Thanks for the advice. We are attempting the fix now.

It turns out it was random text that somehow implanted itself when we did the switch and hard editing did work to correct the issue. We were able to do a search in the MyPhp admin panel and replace all the characters.
