Get Line items in Paypal?

Is there anyway to guarantee line items be displayed in PayPal instead of the very generic description for all items.

Often I need to view the items in Paypal and there doesn't seem to be anyway to do it currently.

Not sure why you would need to view line items in Paypal since they are displayed on the ZC invoice but for the IPN this is not a viable option,

However if you switch to paypal express it will show line items

Additionally, Line items are turned of in paypal if you do any discounting or fee addition using an order total module. Perhaps this is what's happening?

What would be an example of a fee addition? Like Shipping?

No - anything other than shipping and tax. If subtotal + shipping + tax != total, it won't send the line items. So if you use (for instance) my Quantity Discounts or Better Together contributions, it won't send line items.

However if you switch to paypal express it will show line items

As merlin has said, using Express Checkout will send line items to PayPal, as long as (as swguy is telling you) there are no discounts applied to the order (since PayPal's receipt-math can't handle discounts).
