Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.. but I would like to do some testing whilst the site is down for maintenance but of course can only access the 'down for maintenance' page myself... how should I do this so that I am able to access the pages but the public are not?

admin->confiquration->website maintenance->Down For Maintenance (exclude this IP-Address)

Put the IP address that shows in the admin panel on the menu (green) line
