Problem With category images

hello all, this is my first post so please excuse any mistakes.
I have been using zen for a few months and it my first experience of building a web site/shop of any kind.
I have come a long way since day one i think but im stuck with a little problem at the moment.

when you click a category on the left you are presented with a list of sub-categories.
my problem is that the category image is also shown.
is there a way to remove the category image from here?
i do want the category image in other places (home page for example) but not in the sub category page.
i do know that in order to get them to a decent size i had to create images a certain size as i couldnt find a place to resize them in admin or css (limited knowledge of css, very limited)
i got the curent version of zen with no add ons.
PLEASE can someone help me with this.

You can turn images on/of in Admin > Configuration > Product Listing
