Can I auto select a payment module if a product from a certain category is purchased?

Is it possible to auto select a payment module if a product from a certain category is purchased?

I have products that can be purchased individually on a one time basis and I have products that should be purchased using automated recurring billing (ARB)

If this is possible, please point me in the right direction as to how to get this accomplished.

This isn't something which is included in a standard Zen Cart, but is certainly something you could have coded for you.

You would need to set up a products recurring period, and on checkout, the order routine would need to check if recurring periods are set for any of the products in the cart. If they are, it then needs to set the inital order value, and the recurring price, and interval.

One thing to consider is the recurring payments - are they towards the initial value of the order, or do they cause a new order to be placed each time a payment is received? For example, is it a sofa for $1000 which you pay for with 10 x $100 payments, or is it a magazine subscription which is paid for monthly, with a new magazine order being created each month? Both are possible, it just changes the way you need to handle the response from the payment gateways.
