Trying to upgrade to V1.3.8 - several problems

I am trying, trying, and trying to upgrade from v1.3.0 to v1.3.8.
This is now the end of the 2nd day and I don't think I made much progress. I didn't do the original installation but have now aquired the maintanence. Have already posted one thread about add-ons.
Although I think Zen-Cart is a pretty good system it is NOT user friendly... has a huge learning curve for the webmaster. (I've found it really hard to find where all the data is stored, but I'm learning!). I think I messed up when, not realizing it, somewhere I went from upgrade mode to full install but everything is in a test-store section. Am I okay there? In the upgrade instructions, it says to FTP to your PC your current production files and call the file zen-backup. No problem. Then you're to create another folder and unzip a copy of the original zen cart files. Problem... don't have these files. Can I use the V1.3.8 files as this, since I did an install? If not, how do I get those files?
Sorry this post is so long but felt the background info was needed.

Thanks! I've downloaded the initial release and both patches. Hopefully this will do the trick!
