Displaying A List of categories on the main page...

I am wanting to simply display the categories on my tpl_main_page.tpl and for some reason or another cannot find anything on the web for this...

All I want to do is get an array of the categories in my db... Can anyone point me in the right direction, this task should not be difficult to do.

I am not using the default theme... I would like to get a hold of the PHP function that actually displays the categories... Any ideas?
