can not upload catalog images

I have an error message (in pink) at the top of my admin when I am in the categories menu. It says catalog images directory is not writable..

I can not upload any new images. Where should I look to correct this?

Either with FTP or your hosts file manager

thanks, I finally managed to find to correct the problem. I'm always curious as to how these happen. I didn't change anything before the message began to appear.
