Downloadable Producs, not working, charging for shipping

I've scoured the internet and these forums and I come up with really old posts. The tutorial I found I followed step by step and still there's the shipping charges being added to the product. Not sure if there's been updates to the download option on zen cart since these posts and tutorial.

Also, the zip file that I downloaded to the folder download (could not find one that was listed as downloadS) shows the zip file is on there, but after I list it in the attributes, I can't figure out where I can see that file in the attibutes or product admin to make sure the correct file is associated with the product.

Hope all this makes sense because I'm seriously stumped on how to fix both of these issues that I keep facing and have been for the past 4 hours.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

In addition, when I place a dummy order...there's no link or file given to me for downloading. I assume my customers will pay for something and receive nothing.

Any ideas on that one too?

I had Oscommerce before redoing my webstore on Zen Cart and it was a lot less complicated to get the downloads working and going. There's a lot of things that I love Zen Cart for, but...this is a headache.

ok, figured out the download link thing. Still didn't figure out the first question of shipping. Got the files right and the download link is only made available after the payment confirmation is made.

Not sure if it's automatic with PayPal or if I will have to manually update the status of payment being received in order for them to receive their download link.

When they use PayPal, will the download link become available to them right away since payment will pretty much be instant?

If you're using Express Checkout, yes.

there's the shipping charges being added to the product.

Shipping is automatically skipped for products that are downloadable if you mark the "Always Free Shipping" option as "No; Normal Shipping Rules".
If you mark it as "Special, Product/Download Combo", then it's going to charge shipping.

Also according to the FAQ instructions, Product is Virtual should be set to No. Zen Cart automatically knows to skip asking for the shipping address on downloadable products.

See I had it configured the way that you said.

Product is Virtual: No, Shipping Address Required
Always Free Shipping: No, Normal Shipping Rules

And that charges shipping anyways.

When I do it this way:

Product is Virtual: Yes, Skip Shipping Address
Always Free Shipping: Yes, Always Free Shipping

No shipping charges occur.

I'm fine with leaving it that way, because it works, but...I'm afraid that it will be messing something up somewhere else down the line.

I'm at a loss, I just changed those settings back to the way it's "Supposed to be" and now it works.

Quirky. My mind is blown. I must have done something somewhere to make it not work.
