No Idea What I'm doing...

Okay - so it said there's a new version out - so I've downloaded that now. I'm coming from version 1.3.8

I have no clue now how to upgrade this - it's saying I need to compare files, and do something - I dunno.

I've backed up my database, and backed up my files.

I downloaded WinMerge, and have compared the 1.3.8 version that I have, with the new 1.3.9 version - and can see the differences. Some say Left Only, some say Right Only, some say They're just different.


Why does this have to be difficult? How do i get my cart updated with the new patches, and still keeping my database of customers, and all my products, and the customization of the css files, and templates, etc etc etc...

is there an easy step by step guide that can walk me through what the heck I'm supposed to be doing here, without screwing everything up?

Im with ya mate i tried mine and just stuffed it all so now i have a blank site with no product etc. Its just to hard for novice poeople to upgrade. I tried following the instructions in the download file but didnt understand. anyway hope it all works for you. good luck

The upgrade from 138 to 139 is explained in simple terms in the 'Upgrade Instructions' within the docs folder of the package. If you follow these instructions to a tee you will not loose your customer details, products etc etc etc.

If you are not familiar with using WinMerge read the Help section of that application. As far as I know there is also a support forum for WinMerge somewhere on the web.

You may perceive it as simple terms, but I'm still not sure about these changes, and carrying them over - lol - none of it is explained, and this is where I'm struggling right now... all I want is the new Zen Cart - with my products, my customers, and my templates... it's talking about coding changes, and then adding them to the new new site?

Why ? lol - payment module I have is PayPal Web Payments Pro - I don't have any other addons or payment modules, or shipping modules, it's a pretty simple layout.

If you truly feel you are stuck and need help upgrading, I recommend posting in the Commercial Help Wanted section for someone to do the upgrade for you. There are many of us around here who have lots of experience with upgrades, including the change from Zen version 1.2.x to 1.3.x (THAT was a MAJOT upgrade trust me).

Note, this isn't to promote anyone as far as their abiity to do the upgrade for you, simply a suggestion from a very experienced Zenner ;)

I too had my share of problems when I did the first few upgrades, but after you do this one (with LOTS of patience and following the instructions) you will find that it truly isn't THAT hard and future upgrades will be easier on you ;)

well - I'm not going to hire anyone to do the changes, I'm not an idiot lol - I will figure it eventually, I just wasn't really looking to spend hours upon hours in doing this upgrade

Continuing forward - if someone can please post a reply with help on an explanation of what we're talking about these transferring of customizations, or whatever, into the new zen cart... I need help on this, not advertisement for commercial upgrades.

I didn't advertise a thing first off. I simply stated that if it isn't within your scope you would do well to hire someone to do so for you.

As far as the exacts of doing an upgrade I'll try to help you with your exact question.

#1 BACK UP EVERYTHING !!! Use your site's control panel to zip (compress) your live site files and then download the compressed file. Go to PHPMyAdmin and export your live database. Save that file as well.

#2 Compare the files from your backup to the new Zen 1.3.9 files using win merge (which You have apparently done) The MAJOR things you will be interested in will be the files that are in your existing site but not the new site as those files are usually over rides. Now - PERSONALLY I don't do this as I know that all of the sites I have built are using correct over ride structure - so I simply merge those files in.

#3 upload the NEW files into a seperate directory on your server.

#4 Import your OLD database that you took a backup of into a NEW database that you have created for the upgrade using PHPMYAdmin

#5 Run the Zen installer to upgrade the database .

# 6 Upload your over ride files as applicable.

#7 Remove and Reinstall all payment & shipping mods used.

#8 Reinstall All Mods you have installed aside from the basic zen

#9 TEST Test test

#10 if all is well follow the tutorial for moving the upgrade to your "live site"

I too am baffled by the upgrade, i had a look through all of the installation help files and dont understand most of it, which leaves me with no option but to leave the version im using well alone, its taken me ages to get where I am now and to lose it all would be an absolute nightmare.

It would be really helpful if someone did a step by step walkthrough for dummies like me lol.

Agree, asked my hosting company if they would do the upgrade and got this

""Your site uses Ultimate SEO URLs, which is not compatible with 1.3.9a nor with PHP 5.3. We are currently not using PHP 5.3 but we will have to upgrade to it at some point in time.""


So will not rush into this as there are some potental problems with some hosts
