Categories and sub categories

Hi I need some help trying to understand the subcategories. I understand how to set them up but what I would like to know is if I have two categories one for pearl pendants and one for pearl earrings and I make them both subcategories of Pearl Jewelllery what information goes on the Pearl Jewellery Page .. what purpose does the pearl jewellery page have?

Alternatively I could have a pearl necklace category and have a subcategory of it called pearl earrings and that would take care of the extra page .. is this the way most people split up their categories. Hope ive made myself clear here. Thanks for your time.

The first way is correct. You would set up a category called Pearl Jewellry with just the category name, and description and image, if any. Then you would create the other two categories under that, and populate those with products.

Most important: categories can contain products or subcategories, but not both.

What happens when you accidently put products in a category with subcategories? I removed them but will there be any "invisible" things left hanging around?

Also, any problem with having two categories with the same name at different levels?

If you removed the products you should be OK.

Shouldn't be a problem if they're at different levels.
