Default upgrading with clean install makes me loose admin

    Hello,

I keep running into the same problem over and over again.
Let me start by saying that I've decided to choose a reinstall instead of an upgrade.
Apart from the fact that an upgrade is driving me insane, I also want to redesign the store and don't want to use prevous installed modules anymore, so a fresh install seems a better option for me.

After installing v139b I import the old database, I do want my old orders and customers of course, then run zc_install to upgrade the old db. All is well, but then I want to check the admin area.
This keeps giving me a blank page.
In the old version I renamed the adminfolder, as I was told, but in the new version the adminfolder is called admin.
I tried to rename the damn thing before I imported the db, I tried it after importing the db etc but it doesn't seem to work.

Many hours later I have done repeated the install 5 times, done it over and over again.

Please give me some tips on what the right way is to upgrade this store, cause I'm starting to dislike the whole thing. And really, i'm not a newby ..

    Check your file:
    /admin/includes/configure.php

and make sure that you have the right paths to the /admin directory set up ...

I checked and double checked /admin/includes/configure.php and the paths were all correct.
I installed zen-cart 139b for the sixth time and somehow it seems alright.
The only thing I did differently was importing the old db manually, table by table, comparing the old one with the new one (to stop errors like duplicate entry etc).

Maybe this has something to do with it, I don't know.
De adminfolder is still named admin, I'm too scared right now to change it, don't want to do it all over again.
Once the store is finished and backed up, I'll change it :-)

hmm doesn't work as well as I thought.
Somehow the products are not showed in the admin nor in the store.
The categories are displayed, even the number of products that belong to those categories is displayed, but when you click further, there are no products to display.

If anyone has a hint, please let me know.
In the meantime, I'll keep searching, puzzling and comparing.

What do you see if you try to go into a Category?

Check your cache ... do you see any debug log files in there that might explain the errors?

Well, this is gonna be a solo topic
Thought I write my errors and solutions down, hopefully it can be of help to somebody.

I fixed the problem by changing language_id in every table the language_id is in. In some tables id was set to 2 and I changed it to 1, the id of english in this case. In the old store I had 2 languages, in the new one only 1.

Does anyone know if language packs for 1.3.8 is compatible with the new 1.3.9b ?

I would check your database tables, specifically the products_to_categories table to make sure that in the upgrade process, this table was populated.

As it happens, the data in this table did not make it across in my upgrade from 1.3.8 to 1.3.9b.

That would be a problem with your own export/import process, and not a problem with the Zen Cart database upgrade tools themselves.

I chalked it up to an "anomaly" without judging what caused it given this week's unwanted lesson in ZenCart Security (hence the new sig). At this time, if it's broken, it's either me or GoDaddy.

That being said, seeing one's Categories with no products displayed after upgrade (when you know there are products there) and confirming same with a full listing of all products by clicking "All Products" makes for an interesting afternoon after several days of combing through files in preparation for the move to 1.3.9b.

I'm sure that's a no-brainer for folks with more than a passing familiarity with ZenCart (which, by this time, I should be able to claim but one look at the new sig and you can see I've been taken down a few notches).

I had a hunch it was the products_to_categories table since it was empty (phpMyAdmin is your friend) and something Linda said on another thread confirmed same. If someone else comes across a similar situation following an upgrade, it bears looking at one's DB tables...
