Does anyone know if there is a way to control the width of the right side column besides the controls already in admin?

I'd like to make the column width more narrow on the homepage and the product listing page. Can this be done via custom css? I've used custom css on my product info display page to *remove* the right column but nothing is working when I adjust the width for it on product listing pages
