Category page empty with one entry

I am using 1.38a.

When I create a category and put one item in it, the category page displays as (mostly) blank. It has only "?> ?>" at the top.

How can I fix this?

Apparently they appear in IE. I do not see them in Firefox. At least I do not seem them from the computer I am currently using, which is my main business computer.

So which file, if any, is wrong? The only file I edited manually is header.php. Could that be it?

I am afarid that I need more help with this. It seems that all php files start with "<?php" and end with "<?". I do not see anything else in the header.php file (or other php files that I looked at) that could be causing the problem.

What should I be looking for?

And what does this have to do with nothing appearing on a category page when there is only one item in the category?

I searched for "?> ?>" in all files in my site, and failed to find this text. Does this mean that the "?> ?>" is being generated by the site? How do I look for the source of this error?

Get a fresh set of files locally expand into a dir
Copy/FTP all your files to your local in another dir

Get a diff program - a free one is winmerge and compare one dir to the other
All differences will be noted and you can view them side by side
