Help I can not get the rows to columns module to work

Hi all. I am trying to change my products from listing in a single row to listing in columns.

I installed the column layout grid module.

So I followed instructions.

I do now have the option in the store configuration admin product listing section to choose columns and rows and choose the number of columns...but the website is still showing the rows.

Any ideas.

Okay been looking at it some more. I did get it to work.
But it's not what I wanted.

When you click on a category. the result is in rows. (I want in Columns)
Then when you click on a result the product listings are in rows (but I can change them to columns now if I want because of the add on)

So how can I get the subcategories to display in column layout form as well
