Default Upgrading - is this ok?

    Hi,

I have upgraded my patch and have been advised to upgrade zen cart as well. Is it ok to just copy over all the files from the 1.3.9.c folder onto my site? Or will this not upgrade it? I think I would rather take each file at a time and copy it over and check the site is ok than the other methods as there are hosting issues that make a complete install into another folder first impossible.

    So to summarise!

Will copying over files upgrade the site? If not what else do I need to do?

    Thanks

    NO.. no.. no...

Sorry to be so blunt, but upgrading is a little more complex.

Firstly, you need to understand that over the last few years since you installed ZC, you have probably made CUSTOM edits to certain files.

If you were a good little zenner, you would have followed the OVER-RIDE principle religiously.

If you ever installed additional modules, you would now be referring to the WRITTEN NOTES YOU TOOK, indicating what files replaced or over-ride any CORE files.

Then... when you have a full LIST of all the files that were ever customized and/or loaded as part of an installed module, you will now COMPARE these files with their CORE counterparts from 1.3.9c.

You will (using your knowledge of PHP) then decide what to edit into your customized files, based on what has been changed in their core counterpart.

Only when ALL your CUSTOM files (and module add-on files) are consistent with the 1,3,9c schema, can you safely attempt an upgrade...

... and there is a tutorial for doing that.

    blimey...its not easy is it!

Thanks for the reply and info...

Is there anyway to install the patch 1.3.8a instead as I really don't need to upgrade I just need both to be the same level...

    I currently have
    Zen Cart 1.3.8a
    Patch: 1::
    Database Patch Level: 1.3.9c

    Thanks

How did you get to this point? Your DB is now a version higher than your code?

    They need to be equivalent.

Firstly I was advised to upgrade the database as I had a patch level issue so I did this. Then someone said I needed to upgrade the whole site as the site is not 1.3.9c but I don't want to do this as I never needed to do this in the first place and its loads of work and possibly more problems.

So is there no way of bringing the database patch down to match the zen cart?

Also, what would be the issue with having two levels? It seems fine?

    Thanks for replying

Until something jumps out at you that you cannot see, or would not expect...

Someone more knowledgeable that me needs to indicate if a higher db version is potentially a problem.

    Ok, thanks again

I've contacted my hosting company and solved the issue of downlading the new version and setting it up with a database so I am in the process of upgrading.

Would still be interested in knowing about having a higher DB though...anyone?

    Thanks
