Cannot open catalog from admin (or at all)

I reinstalled 1.3.9b when I found I had not installed several elements correctly.(I will update when I sort out all this) This time I carefully followed the tutes ending up with a CUSTOM template as advised. I finished everything all OK until I went to Admin. Clicking the 'Online Catalog' produces nothing/ no template opens at all - not even the 'Classic' if you edit. If I try to preview, an error comes up '403 Forbidden etc' At a loss as to the reason...

If you can successfully open admin, then the problems lie in the "catalog" (shop) side of the website.

You have probably made errors in your "custom" template.

First thing to do (in admin) is to CHANGE back to "classic" template and see if the webshop comes up.

If it does, then you have narrowed the problem down to your CUSTOM work.

You should also (via FTP) look in the cache folder (in the root installation of your software) for error logs.

No such luck... just another blank. The site seems to hang there.
I have bben back thru the tute to check it off point by point but nothing came to light. Tks anyway.

Are there log files in your cache folder?
