Default Filezilla - does it merge?

I am using filezilla to upload the store and add ons, but when the overwrite screen come up, there is no choice to merge. Does it merge automatically or just overwrite?

If filezilla does not merge, what similar free programs will?

    FTP always completely overwrites files.

You'll need an offline copy of your files and WinMerge or similar.

It sounds like you're relying too much on an automated merge process. That's dangerous. Human interaction is important when upgrading and merging.

On Windoze you can use Beyond Compare (not free) to do file comparisons directly with a live site, but I submit that that's still not wise practice.

Instead, it's much wiser to do comparisons locally, get the merged files tested on a test site (local or remote), and then when you're ready to update your live site you can use your FTP program to upload all the changes directly. Some FTP apps have a "synchronize" feature, which can be very handy for doing very quick updates to a live site. I think that's a more important (and safer) feature than a blind automated merge.
