Set Permissions to Folders and Files

Hi, everyone.
I am new with Zen-Cart and I am installing it for the first time. The instructions say that I have to set permissions to few folders.
But my question is: Do I need to set the same permissions to all files and subfolders included in them? That is what I did and the installation is running fine and the first checklist shows everything ok. I don't want to keep going because if it is any security breach for me seting all the files and subfolders (just for the folders listed on the installation instructions) to 777, and don't want to come back and restart everything again. Also, in the instructions I can see that all the other files should be 644 but in my server all the files are 604. Do I have to go thru all the files and change them to 644? Please, give any advise. I want to do everything with no mistakes and no wasting time restarting everything again. Thanks.

Maybe would be a good idea to include the part "(If prompted whether to include files/folders underneath them (also called "recursive"), say or check "Yes")" into the instructions that comes in the zip file.
