Subract Stock Before Checkout

Hi,

First of all I just want to say how awesome this forum is, it has been a huge help.

I have a problem with negative stock being allowed. I have gathered and applied the usual answers "check stock level-true", "Allow Checkout-false". I think the problem is when my site gets slammed or someone adds an item to their cart and does not pay for it right away it will allow them to checkout later (I realize this is by design ie to save the cart contents) and therefore allows negative stock.

I was wondering if there is a way to have the stock subtracted before going to paypal checkout. And yes, I know I will have situations where customers dont follow through with the paypal checkout and stock is still subtracted.

I am using v10.3.8
I do have the stock-by-attributes mod installed if that matters
My Stock Settings are as folows in admin:

Check stock level true
Subtract stock true
Allow Checkout false
Mark product out of stock ***
Stock Re-order level 5
Show available stock level in cart when less than order true
Display Images in Admin false
Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to 0
Show Sold Out Image in place of Add to Cart 1
Product Quantity Decimals 0
Show Shopping Cart - Delete Checkboxes or Delete Button 3
Show Shopping Cart - Update Cart Button Location 3
Show New Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 1
Show Featured Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 2
Show Special Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 3
Show Upcoming Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 4
Show Notice of Combining Shopping Cart on Login 0

In short, no.

There are only two possible places where stock can be subtracted:

1 . When placed in the customer's cart

2. After checkout is complete

The Zencart developers have chosen #2, which means there may be instances when two customers both have the last item in their carts, and the first to checkout will get the product. In that case, the second customer should see a "Sorry' message if you have Allow Checkout set to False.

If Zencart used #1, a customer could place an item in his cart, leave, and never make the purchase, tying that product up for a long while. Using #2 makes a sale more likely.

Hi Guys,
I have a similar problem to the original poster.
I operate a store that sells second hand, one-off items.

The store allows a person to browse the store and add an item to their cart, but upon returning to the store to continue shopping the item is still available to be added again.

I have all products in the store setup to only show an add to cart button, not a qty box and am setting a stock qty of 1 when adding the product.

I can see that eventually somebody is going to accidentally do this and get themselves confused.
Does any body know a way to prevent this from happening.

Have you guys tested out those scenarios? It should pop a message up saying the item is out of stock. If there is no stock, no longer available when they login and try to follow through with the order. Are you both using stock with attribute mod?
