Still fairly new at all this and need some guidance.

I am maintaining a site for a family member who has no idea how the pages build on the fly and me trying to explain it only confuses her and frustrates me.

Anyway what she has asked for is a "prompt" (say a bit of text) to remind people of a relevant product if it is not already in the shopping cart.

How do I determine what's in the cart and then where would I write my bit of code to make it show in the checkout page?

I am using 1.38a and have a template loaded over that. I want to male sure I make the changes in the template so I can actually safely upgrade her in the very near future.
