I've been looking for this forever with no solution. The best workaround I came up with was to use the New Products Module ONLY on the Category Page as it is filtered based upon the Top Level category. I could then set the number of products per row to mimick that of my normal product listing. The only drawbacks are there are no navTopLinks to additional pages, and the new products module selects products at random.
