Formating Side Box Search

I am trying to reduce the length of the text field box of the side bar search form, but can not seem to do this, I have made changes to the file tpl.search.php,

But the size stays the same does anybody know where i can reduce the lebgth of this field.

If you mean the actual width of the input box, find this ($column_width-30) in the file you mentioned, and make the '30' larger to make the box narrower.

Thanks, I found that and changed the number to 15 but it made no difference, but i didn't realise i needed to increase the size, i will try it now thanks.
