Clickable area of button

The clickable area of my search button.gif in the header is less than half (only about 2mm high) that of the same button used in the sidebox search.

Elsewhere I have CSS button whose clickable area is more than twice that of the button area, so much so that it overlaps the clickable area of an adjacent CSS button.

How does one increase/decrease the clickable area of a button?

After a lot of mucking around, the problems have resolved.

In the first instance, there was a div partly covering the button.

In the second instance, there was a cursor: pointer; in the css for an underlying div.

Thank goodness for borders and background-colors.
