Sort Order for Categories

This may sound like a simple question but I just wanted to be sure.

Can Sort Orders for either Products or Categories be entered as negatives? And if they are entered as negatives will the category sort from bottom most negative to highest positive?

If you just need more "room" for the Categories Sort Order ...

You could replace the sort_order in the categories table with sort_order * 10 ...

That is correct ... it would be best to backup the database then you can run a SQL on the table to replace the field sort_order with sort_order * 10 ...
