Using zencart v 1.3.8

This is my first zen cart website, and my first time posting here for help. I have two big problems right now:

LOGIN
I don't even know what the Login button at the top of the page is supposed to do! it came with the template, it just sends me to a blank explorer page. It's always been broken, I thought once i had the shipping and products and taxes and payment all set up it would work but it doesn't!

CHECKOUT
I add items to my cart and then try and checkout and i just get a blank page! I searched to make sure the page got uploaded to my server via ftp - it's there... why won't it work?

I also can not get the Languages drop down to go away. I turned it off and it still shows up. any ideas?
