Default Install two carts on the same domain & same mySQL.

Can I successfully install two separate carts on the same URL for my client? This is what he wants in order to save on the purchase of two certificates.

I did a manual install of two zen-carts on the same URL using Zen-Cart version 1.3.9d.

I installed one cart on mydomain.com/catcart and the other cart on mydomain.com/dogcart. So they are in separate sub-folders of the same URL.

Both databases were stored on myhost.mydomain.com. I used a different prefix for each cart as in ‘cat’ prefix and as in ‘dog’ prefix, so each of the tables within the host are unique.

    I used the same db_server_name & password, i.e,
    ‘DB_SERVER_USERNAME', 'someusername'
‘DB_SERVER_PASSWORD', 'somepassphrease' for both carts. Should they have been different users and passwords? If so how do I change them?

Has anyone done this successfully? Are there any other items that need to be addressed?

Should I give up and move the second cart to another domain?

Technically there's absolutely no reason not to do this. Zen Cart can support it.

Commercially? For most sites the URL is an important part of the branding, so sharing a URL would make and differentiation between the sites more difficult.

And from your point of view as a service provider? I'd run a mile to get away from this client.

You can get a cheap SSL cert for under $10. Maybe have all the whizzy features or a great SSL logo, but if your client really is that cost conscious, they're out there and they work.

Any client who wants you to start bending over backwards so that they can save themselves 10 bucks, isn't one that's likely to value your time and contribution to their business very highly.

How much time have you spent on this already?

Branding is not a problem but I think the carts are having other problems.

How much time? Geezzz, you would bring up a point LIKE THAT, wouldn't you. I'm sort of stubborn with it looks so simple, even if it costs me time.

Point well taken. I think I’ll probably move the second cart tomorrow.

    LOL.

Now don't get me wrong. This is the sort of task that once done, you wonder what all the fuss was about. You can literally just put them in different folders and install them from each location with the relevant database prefix and you're up and running.

It's more that this type of request can be indicative of a certain sort of client. A bit like the prospective clients who contact us from time-to-time and start comparing our rates to some guy they found on a freelance site who's willing to have a go at doing a Zen Cart as long as they don't mind the time difference.
