Product "on order" status. Is it possible?

Is there any way to have an additional product status, like "on order". We have products that are in stock and available for immediate delivery and some that have to be ordered from the suppliers and, therefore, take longer. Depending on stock, sometimes different sizes of the same product could be "in stock" and others "on order"

I'd like to be able to make this visible to the customer. Is it possible?

I think the easiest way would be to use the out of stock feature....then an image appears that tells the customer the item is OUT OF STOCK....but you can change that image to say "item on order" or something.

ON one of my sites I have done something similar....if you go to the following page

You will see the first item is out of stock...click on that....and you can see an orange highlighted area that shows its out of stock and when it will arrive....

I was allowing them to check out in the past on back ordered items but it became a pain b/c the manufacturers were often giving me wrong dates.....

Yes, its close! But I do want people to be able to order things that are "on order"

Then just make sure you have a stock level of greater than 0 in your product (or inventory turned off in the admin) - cannot think of where that is offhand!

So you will put in your product info the date you expect the product to arrive.....and then I adjusted the CSS to highlight that information....

....and then either set you product level to greater than 0 or make sure your Stock level settings are set to allow for checkout!
