Local 'Dev' Install

Hi

I'm running 1.3.9 patch D.

I have followed the guide here http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/LocalCopySite

which enables me to develop locally on my PC, then upload to my hosted site.

I have one problem. Say my real world domain is www.myrealdomain.com


Locally, I have Zencart set up as www.example.com and a mapping to loopback IP in LMHosts (as per ZenCart Guide).


I assume the site email address settings are stored in the actual DB? - As when I transfer my local copy to the live site, I get email addresses showing example.com

The only way around this is to set up www.myrealdomain.com with a mapping to localhost on my PC? (A bit of a pain, as I will have to remember to change LMHosts when I want to access my real live site!!!)

Am I missing something obvious here? The only decent work around I can think of is to develop locally in a Virtual Machine.

So the site shows up on the live location properly right? In other words, you type in www.myrealdomain.com and the site comes up as expected (Sidebar: sharing your real URL always helps).

Assuming that's the case, and the emails you're getting simply have a bogus sender, open your Admin and have a look under Configuration > E-Mail Options. That should be enlightening :)

Apologies for the cryptic URLs!

My real address is http://www.reefbay.co.uk

I have developed locally on the domain www.example.com (but redirected to localhost, using LMHosts files).


I uploaded the Zencart database and my template override files to my real domain yesterday. As you will see, the link works and all is fine in the world - apart from emails.

Because I develop locally with the domain set to example.com

If I look in Configuration > E-Mail Options (on domain reefbay.co.uk), I see example.com set as the domain. This has obviously been transferred from my local PC when I performed the restore yesterday.

Apologies if I am missing something obvious here. I know I can manually edit these fields on my live site - but wouldn't it be nice if there was a faster way of sorting this.

Just gonna have to change the values in that area on your live site. It's not automagical, but fortunately it's not hard either.

Also why not just use your real domain on your dev environment? You're going to all the trouble with LMHosts, after all.

Fair point!

Might be a good time to try out the Windows 7 Virtual enviorment for a dev area.

I just use WAMP server and avoid overriding the configure.php files or the entire DB. Configuring each shop for the specific location does not affect my development of site files at all.
