I am on 1.3.9b how essential is it to install every upgrade? The whole process looks pretty scary to me, I know I'll have to do it at some point but it just looks so confusing.

Upgrading to "c" and then to "d" (and then to later minor point revisions) is simply a matter of replacing the files listed in the individual release notices in the /docs/ folder. Do each one separately.
