Sub-category Images in on Parent Category Page

Hi everyone!

I have been searching for the solution for hours, and cannot find anything. So, here I am!

Basically, when someone clicks on a category that has sub categories, they only get a 'new in this category' module with a few new products.
What I want to have, is for there to be a grid with each of the sub categories. There would ideally be an image, with the name of the sub category underneath. Upon clicking this, the user is taken to that category.

How do I get to this sub-category grid stage? I have seen it on various Zen Cart websites, so I know it can be done..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What's your setting for the bottom option in Admin - Configuration - Product Listing ?

The option "Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating" is set to on, which is odd. Surely that means that it should always show?... Just looked around in the Layout Boxes Controller section, but there's nothing there that would affect that either.

Could it be to do with the template I've chosen? That was my first choice, but saying that, I've never changed the aforementioned option before, and even when I was using the default template, there was never any subcategories on show...
